Arts Integration, Servant Leadership, and Emotional Trauma Healing (ASE)

Why do so many people emerge from the American educational system emotionally illiterate? How can so many African American and Latino males continue to end up in jail instead of a college dorm room? Is the current emphasis in American education on high stakes standardized testing a solution to the deeply rooted socio-economic and racial issues confronting public schools? Does the racial and cultural background of teachers have an impact on student achievement?

These are some of the potential questions that I want to investigate during my journey through the EdD program. As a proponent of social constructivism, my expectation is to learn how to conduct ethnographic research. In my second year of the program, I will conduct a thorough exploration of the literature to evaluate my premise that public school systems must transcend “traditional measures” of academic success and develop culturally relevant approaches that promote diverse learning experiences. Most importantly, I need to deepen my practice in aesthetic education and trauma healing training in order to better serve the community.
